Like many offices around the country, the team here at Reason Global were caught up in the World Cup fever; cheering on England and following the progress of our teams in a traditional office sweepstake.
The sweepstake – organised by Debbie who is one of our senior brokers – gave us lots to talk about during the group stages, with our morning chats dominated with banter about the previous evening’s matches, the expertise of the players and the inevitable VAR conversations. Many of us were even supporting countries that we would never have considered supporting previously.
As we reached the knockout stages and the mood and excitement grew in support of the English football team, interest in the office also reached fever pitch. Spurs fans in the office – Debbie and Donna – were very proud of their players (with 5 players from the Spurs team in the England side) including of course the captain, Harry Kane (the Golden Boot winner!)
With only a few team members still in the game, the England semi-final match against Croatia saw Donna, an avid football supporter with very divided loyalties for this match having Croatia as her sweepstake pick, pitted against Dawn who had England. In the end, it was Dave who scooped the first prize in the sweepstake with France in the final, but Donna still managed the consolation of second prize to make up for England not making the final!
